Plants with milky juice. Leaves simple, opposite or whorled. Stipules absent. Flowers regular, bisexual, in terminal or axillary cymes; calyx 5 lobed; corolla gamopetalous, actinomorphic, lobes 5, convolute, twisted in bud. Stamens 5, filaments short, adnate to or near the corolla base. Anthers sagitate, free or adhering to stigma, style simple, stigma bifid. The family can be distinguished from Asclepiadacea by the presence of single stigma, absence of pollinia and corona
